Class Policies / Information

WELCOME TO OUR KINDERGARTEN CLASS !!!

Room 109 -  Mrs. Katherine Walker, Teacher

                      Mrs. Sonia Febres, Assistant Teacher

We are pleased to have your child in our room this year.  We look forward to a great year full of exciting discoveries and successful learning. The following information will help you and your child transition into our class.

Bookbags / Folders / Extra Clothes

Each child should have a large bookbag to carry their library books and important papers home from school.  Please check your child’s bag each night for their papers, notes, and school information. These papers will come home in their daily folder, please put the daily folder back into the bookbag so we can use it again the next day. All notes to the teacher must be sent in the daily folder – we do not search bags. It is your child’s responsibility to put the folder into the basket, put their bookbag away in the closet, and hang their own jacket up on a hanger.   In the bookbag should be a complete a change of clothes according to the season. Please work with your child so that they may be successful fastening their shoes and pants.

Class Discipline

The children in our room are expected to treat others kindly and conduct themselves in a way that does not interfere with the other children’s right to learn.  We use a warning system to remind the children about their behavior.  The children receive two warnings, then are asked to pull a popsicle stick. Then they have two more warnings before they are asked to pull another stick.  When a child pulls 3 sticks, the child loses centers or recess and a note is sent to the parents explaining the situation and requesting that the parents speak with the child about correcting their behavior. If the behavior violates one of our major school rules, then the child will be referred to the school Counselor. Time Out may also be used if necessary.

Conferences and Teacher Communication

Conferences are scheduled on Tuesdays at 2:15, and while the children are in a special area class. We will have a conference at the end of the first grading period to discuss your child’s progress in Kindergarten.

The best way to communicate with me is by e-mail:  Katherine.Walker@am.dodea.edu.  I check my e-mail several times daily.  All classroom messages and information will be sent out via e-mail, please let me know if your e-mail changes. If you wish to send a note, please place it in the daily folder.

Change of Bus Plans

Please send a note in the daily folder if your child is not to be put on the bus that day. If your child does not have a note, we will follow their regular plan. Also, we must have a note if your child is to be picked up by anyone other than yourself and that person must be on the contact list in the office.

PE shoes

Your child is required to wear athletic shoes to PE class for safety. Our PE day is Monday.  On the other days, please have your child wear shoes that are safe for climbing on the playground equipment. Flip flops are not permitted in school.

Breakfast

Please make sure your child knows their individual plan for breakfast.  If you wish them to eat, they should go straight into the food line when they get off the bus. Any child who does not eat will come to the classroom for activities at the Meeting Place. You can check your child’s account balance with the cafeteria 706-544-8980.

Homework

Homework will begin the last week in October. Your child will receive the homework for the week on Monday in the Homework Folder.  Please return the papers in the folder by the following Friday.  The homework for August and September is learning to tie shoes.

Classroom Assessments

Students in Kindergarten will be responsible for tracking their own progress and setting their own goal for learning. This will be accomplished by the use of rubrics, conferencing, data analysis, and reflection. Each student will have a portfolio folder containing work samples which parents are welcome to review.

The Kindergarten Standards can be found on the DODEA website.

Snacks

We have snack time each day about 10:15 and we eat as a class.  If you could share some healthy snacks with us (nothing sugary), it would be appreciated.
